Real Madrid veteran makes strong case to start against Getafe following international form

Real Madrid are facing a familiar challenge as their defensive options become increasingly thin, especially after Dean Huijsen’s injury. 

While the ongoing international break has disrupted the rhythm of the record European champions, it has offered David Alaba the perfect opportunity to prove his value. 

The Austrian defender has enjoyed a strong run of performances with his national team, showing that he still has plenty to offer despite limited minutes at the club.

Alaba has captained Austria during the international breaks in September and October, starting all four matches. 

His performances show that he is still focused on maintaining a competitive edge, keeping himself ready for both the World Cup and potential opportunities at Real Madrid.

Maintaining form through Austria

Despite playing just 100 minutes for Real Madrid so far this season, Alaba has refused to become irrelevant.

With the national team, he played 70 minutes against Cyprus, 78 minutes against Bosnia, 63 minutes against San Marino, and a full match against Romania. These minutes are crucial for keeping him sharp and match-fit.

Alaba’s role as Austria’s captain is not merely symbolic, as he leads by example on the pitch, ensuring that his form does not drop during periods of limited club action.

Eyes on the future

With injuries looming in the Real Madrid defence, including Antonio Rudiger and Dean Huijsen, Alaba is positioning himself to take advantage of any opportunity that arises. 

He is determined to be available with competitive minutes under his belt, even if it comes primarily through his national team performances.

However, the Austrian’s situation at the club remains delicate. With his contract expiring in 2026, Alaba’s future at Real Madrid is uncertain, and an exit remains a real possibility. 

Still, his professionalism and leadership on the international stage underline that he is far from done, and he could yet play a decisive role in Madrid’s defensive plans if given the chance.
