Kobbie Mainoo has yet to put pen to paper on a new Manchester United contract, despite being in talks for several months.

Whilst it isn’t an overly pressing matter, given he still has two years remaining plus a one-year option, you can understand why the club are so keen to tie down such a valuable asset before he gets any closer to the end of his deal.

That’s likely to be the case even more so after the summer’s developments; when he was left on the bench for the opening two Premier League fixtures of the term, Mainoo asked to leave on loan in the final week of the transfer window.

His requests fell on deaf ears amongst United chiefs, and he was informed that he was expected to stay put and fight to reclaim his spot under Ruben Amorim.

The Portuguese boss has already previously admitted that Mainoo is directly vying with his skipper, Bruno Fernandes, for a place on the teamsheet, making it a significant uphill battle for the young midfielder to stake his claim.

Since the window closed, the 20-year-old’s situation still hasn’t improved, with Mainoo yet to feature for even half an hour in a single cameo.

The last time he was granted so long on the pitch was when he replaced Mason Mount at the interval of United’s 3-2 win over Burnley on August 30.

He subsequently played 28 minutes in the Manchester derby, three minutes in the dying embers against Chelsea, 24 minutes of the defeat to Brentford and 13 minutes in the win over Sunderland prior to the international break – in which Mainoo was again overlooked by Thomas Tuchel.

Alas, you couldn’t really blame the Carrington graduate for reiterating his desires to leave in January, especially with the World Cup on the horizon.

Ben Jacobs was pressed on the player’s contract situation when speaking with The United Stand on Thursday. He said: “I think it’s gone quiet because Ruben Amorim is challenging Kobbie Mainoo to learn the system and to break in and to adapt and to improve, and Mainoo is waiting and seeing what opportunities he gets before he is prepared to commit to something.

“So I’m not aware of anything developing with a contract extension, but in an ideal world, we mustn’t forget that he wants to play for Manchester United… Manchester United are also open to extending Kobbie Mainoo.”
