Liverpool have agreed to terms with Stade Rennais to sign French defender Jérémy Jacquet, who will arrive on Merseyside ahead of the 2026/27 season should all go smoothly in terms of international clearance and work permit. Reports suggest the agreement is worth £60 million, with a £55 million fee and up to £5 million in add ons.
The defender has five caps for the France U21s and is currently 20 years old, though will turn 21 before next season kicks off. While playing with the France U19s his French side made it to the finals of the U19 European Championship, and he was named in the team of the tournament that year. He has made 18 appearances for Rennes in Ligue 1 this season.
He has had the best success rate in aerial duels in the French top flight this season, which will interest Liverpool — already dominant in the air at the center of defense. He has put in strong performances this early in his career, but has yet to be tested at the top level of sport and will still have some growing and learning to do.
He debuted in 2024 and has made a total of 31 appearances for Rennes, also gaining experience away on loan with Clermont Foot.
Reds should see this as succession planning, given Virgil Van Dijk’s age, but given Ibrahima Konaté‘s open contract situation and the lack of senior depth at that position questions must be asked about how soon the succession is set to occur.
