After suffering consecutive defeats to PSG in the Champions League and Sevilla in La Liga, Barcelona are exploring ways to regain their attacking edge.

As such, according to Mundo Deportivo, manager Hansi Flick is considering a tactical adjustment, with Marcus Rashford potentially taking the role of number 9 to restore pressure and intensity at the front.

The idea of using Rashford in the central striker position comes as part of a broader reflection following Barça’s 1-4 loss in Sevilla

Players and staff have discussed the team’s weaknesses, particularly the lack of pressing and energy in attack.

What is Flick’s idea?

To make this setup work, Flick ideally wants Raphinha on the left wing, Lamine Yamal on the right, and Fermin Lopez in attacking midfield.

All three players are currently injured but are expected back for the match against Girona on October 18.

If these players are not ready in time, Flick could delay introducing this forward line until Barcelona’s Champions League game against Olympiacos, which would also serve as a preparation for the match against Real Madrid.

This gives the team a chance to rehearse tactics in a high-stakes European match before the season’s biggest fixture.

Reviving Barcelona’s pressing identity

It is said that Flick wants the team to reclaim its high-press style and intensity from the front, a strategy that helped Barcelona win three trophies last season and reach the Champions League semi-finals.

The approach involves pushing the defensive line forward and forcing opponents into offsides, making Barça dangerous in transition.

After trying Ferran Torres and using Robert Lewandowski mainly in the second half, Rashford is now the preferred option to lead the line.

His presence at number 9 could re-energise Barcelona’s attack, helping them regain confidence, execute Flick’s vision, and approach the El Clasico with maximum strength.
